suma.id-Sashya Subono Halse, a 36-year-old Indonesian animator, has made significant contributions to the global film industry through her work at Weta FX, a renowned digital visual effects and animation company based in Wellington, New Zealand. Over the past four years, Sashya has showcased her expertise in high-profile projects, including Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series such as Hawkeye and She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, as well as major films like Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.
Mastering Matchmoving and Facial Animation
Sashya specializes in matchmoving, a technique that seamlessly integrates computer-generated elements into live-action footage to create a realistic effect. Additionally, her expertise in facial motion animation brings digital characters to life by capturing human movements and expressions and transferring them to virtual figures, enhancing the emotional depth of characters in films and series.
Growing up in Wellington, Sashya was inspired by iconic films like The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Pixar’s Toy Story. Her fascination with Buzz Lightyear’s design sparked a lifelong passion for animation. “Watching those films as a young girl, I was captivated and knew I wanted to be part of creating that magic,” she shared in an interview with CNA Women.
A Journey from Indonesia to New Zealand
In 2010, Sashya and her New Zealand-born husband relocated to Indonesia after their marriage. There, she pursued a diploma in film but quickly realized that on-set production wasn’t her calling. Instead, she gravitated toward animation, teaching herself skills through online resources and launching personal projects. Her early works from the 2010s are still available on her YouTube channel, Road2Animate, and her blog of the same name.
In 2012, Sashya completed her diploma and welcomed her first child, a daughter. Balancing motherhood, she pursued a bachelor’s degree in interactive animation at SAE Indonesia, where she honed her skills in video graphics and special effects. After graduating, she took on freelance animation projects, taught part-time at SAE Indonesia, and later became the head of its animation department. During this time, she also welcomed her second child.
Returning to Wellington and Joining Weta FX
After eight years in Indonesia, Sashya and her family returned to Wellington, driven by a desire to elevate her career. While freelancing, she enrolled in a one-year master’s program in character animation at Victoria University of Wellington. In 2020, she landed her dream job at Weta FX, coinciding with the birth of her third child, a son.
“Joining Weta FX was a dream come true,” Sashya said. “The team consists of experts who foster a collaborative culture, always open to learning from one another.”
Bringing Magic to Major Projects
Working on blockbuster projects like Avatar: The Way of Water and MCU series, Sashya finds joy in creating the same sense of wonder she experienced as a child watching films like The Lord of the Rings. Her favorite aspect of her role at Weta FX is the diversity of projects, which allows her to translate human emotions into a wide range of characters—whether human, animal, alien, or otherwise.
For Sashya, facial animation is more than technical skill; it’s about conveying universal human experiences through digital characters. “It’s not just about adding fancy effects—it’s about connecting audiences with emotions, even if it’s through a character like an ape,” she explained.
